Vy Aleknos is the leader of a hawk shifter flock. Openly gay since he was a teen, Vy is proud and self-assured on the outside, while secretly worrying he’ll be forced to spend his life alone because two males can’t be mates. When bear shifter Robert Cimino appears in Vy’s small town, Vy realizes his concerns were unfounded — he has a male mate, and a sexy, dominant one to boot. Robert is a bear shifter who refuses to shift. Immediately attracted to Vy, he deviates from his normal pattern and seeks more than a one off with the powerful, bristly hawk. But Robert’s affections are rooted in his human form, and when Vy discovers Robert doesn't recognize him as his mate, he pulls away. If Robert wants to stay with Vy, he must convince a man deeply ruled by his animal instincts to give their relationship as humans a chance.

I love CC, I really do, but I've not read and Calmes before, nor do I have anything languishing waiting to be read. So this is a bit new for me. I **THINK** CC writes Robert and Mary writes Vy. They are certainly written differently, but then again, they are very different characters. But something was missing for me, and I can't say what! *insert wailing sound!* I liked that they were different, both in animal and human form. I liked that Vy went off in a hissy fit at silly little things, but big issues like Robert could kill him if he shifted, didn't faze him. I LOVED that Robert found him cute while having said hissy fits.I liked that Robert mellowed Vy in the way he dealt with everyone. AND I loved that Robert's bear was finally allowed free to enable Robert the man to know that Vy was his true mate. Its a bit different to CC's usual shifter stuff, in that there is angst and drama and falling out. But equally, amazing make up sex, which should include 3 orgasms! I think, maybe, I need to read some more of Mary Calmes work, and then come back and try again. Maybe then I'll feel her way of writing better and something will click. 3.5 stars

Cardeno C. - CC to friends - is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few "awwws" into a reader's day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. Cardeno's stories range from sweet to intense, contemporary to paranormal, long to short, but they always include strong relationships and walks into the happily-ever- after sunset. Cardeno's Home, Family, and Mates series have received awards from Love Romances and More Golden Roses, Rainbow Awards, the Goodreads M/M Romance Group, and various reviewers. But even more special to CC are heartfelt reactions from readers, like, "You bring joy and love and make it part of the every day."
Mary Calmes believes in romance, happily ever afters, and the faith it takes for her characters to get there. She bleeds coffee, thinks chocolate should be its own food group, and currently lives in Kentucky with a five-pound furry ninja that protects her from baby birds, spiders and the neighbor’s dogs.
