Western, Contemporary, Romance

One broken heart. One battered soul. No one said life would be fair or easy. Quiet, Peruvian-born artist Cassie Lopez learned this the hard way. Betrayed by the man she planned to marry, she shut herself off as far away from all but her closest friend from college... Until the night Luke Denton came crashing into her Colorado mountain sanctuary with a vengeance. Confused by her heart's response to this kind and gentle man, Cassie pushes herself to help the cowboy recover quickly so she can send him on his way. But Luke’s patience and understanding threaten to break down the very defenses she needs to survive in this world after he's gone. Search-and-Rescue worker Luke, who lost his wife and unborn child in a tragic accident, also knows firsthand of the unfairness of life. He keeps his own nightmares at bay by focusing on his rescue activities, most recently adopting and working with abused and neglected horses. Can two wounded people find trust and love together? Do nightmares end where dreams come true?

Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

okay, here we go. Now I've slept on it, and dreamt about this review, I can word, sort of, what I really want to say. This is book 6 of the Rescue Me Saga. You ABSOLUTELY must read the others, in order to fully follow the story line that overlaps from previous books. You also MUST heed the trigger warning. This book contains some difficult subjects, mainly rape and PTSD that some readers may find hard to read. Now, thats out the way..... FREAKING AMAZING BOOK! One broken heart. One battered soul. No one said life would be fair or easy. Quiet, Peruvian-born artist Cassie Lopez learned this the hard way. Betrayed by the man she planned to marry, she shut herself off as far away from all but her closest friend from college… Until the night Luke Denton came crashing into her Colorado mountain sanctuary with a vengeance. This is Luke and Cassie's book. We met them both before, they met each other before. Luke ends up in Cassie's cabin after an avalanche, and she is left to care for him for several weeks while he recovers from concussion and hypothermia. During those weeks, they grow to know each other, and Luke is very aware someone hurt Cassie, and hurt her bad. He takes it upon himself to learn her triggers, her ways, her very soul, and he knows, deep down that she IS the Angel sent by his long dead wife to save him. He just needs to figure out how to save Cassie while she saves him. What stood out, first and foremost, was that this book is bursting with pain. Lots of pain for both Cassie and Luke, and his horses too. And the second thing, is hope. Once Cassie sees, really sees Luke, its beautiful, truly beautiful. Its a long book, 751 pages. Took me all day. Life kept getting in the way of my reading. Normally I would moan about that. But here it was actually a good thing. It kept me from getting too overwhelmed, too centered on this book. It meant I could regroup, assess, process what I'd just read, before launching into the next chapter, and getting all upset again. I didn't cry. but I'm sure some will. I WAS emotionally attached to Luke and Cassie, yes, but I couldn't cry for them, cos that would be sad. And I'm not sad that they now have each other and life is beautiful again. The way Masters deals with Cassie's rape and recovery is astounding , and her depth of research shows. ALL of the books in this series carry a huge amount of research, and its makes for, while difficult to read, a much more ....more..... **ARGH**..more.... enjoyable is not the right word, but a much more in depth, character connection that I have not read anywhere else. There is talk of the club and what goes on there, BUT nothing her for Luke and Cassie, except rope play, right near the end. So don't go into this looking for scenes, cos there ain't none! Luke's Dom side does come out, but not in a Dom way, if that makes any sense. He loves Cassie, and uses his Dom side to help her through what she is going through. BUT There is a Ka-Thunk! This also has a large part of Adam and Karla and babies! lots of babies!! We also get a little bit of just about everyone else too. I think they all needed a say here, and Masters made sure they all got their words out. Adam/Karla, Marc/Angel, Megan/Ryder, Savannah/Damián, we get a little bit of their stories, overlapping and following on, written in a way only Masters can. Obviously, all these characters have a journey that is not finished, needs more telling, but who is next, I don't know! Grant needs a story, definately. Thank you, Ms Masters, for an astounding read. The wait was most definately worth it.
