The acclaimed author of I Smile Back, Amy Koppelman is a novelist of astonishing power, with a sly, dark voice, at once fearless and poetic. In Koppelman’s new novel, Dr. Susanna Seliger is a renowned psychiatrist who specializes in treatment-resistant depression. The most difficult cases come through her door, and Susa is always ready to discuss treatment options, medication, and symptom management but draws the line at engaging with feelings. A strict adherence to protocol keeps her from falling apart.

But her past is made present by one patient, Jim, whose struggles tear open Susa’s hastily stitched up wounds, revealing her latent feeling that she could have helped the people closest to her, especially her adored, cool, talented graffiti-artist brother. Spectacularly original, gorgeously unsettling, HESITATION WOUNDS is a novel that will sink deep and remain—like a persistent scar or a dangerous glow-in-the-dark memory.

Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

Firstly, if you want an easy, comfortable read then this book isn't what you should read! Why? Amy Koppelman keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish in this story about Dr Susanna Seliger, a psychiatrist who has so many unanswered and unsolved issues of her own that you wonder how she isn't receiving treatment.

There's no sugar coating in this book, which is good. It's extremely dark in places, but you have to keep reading, because she makes you NEED to know what happens, however dark or disturbing it may become. It's refreshingly honest, and I have to say I did enjoy it immensely. I'd love to read more from this author as this was a great book.

I loved the character of Susanna, as she suddenly faces things long since buried. I like the fact that you see a strong capable psychiatrist, who basically is as messed up as her patients, but is oh so good at hiding from it. How she deals with it....read the book and find out. This book has teeth, it will bite you and bite deep. Wonderful!!
