What if the only friend you have isn’t real?

When the voices in his head begin to make sense, high school senior Branson Kovac turns to the one friend he’s still got… only to discover he’s not really there.

A Divided Mind is about a young man who has a schitzo-affective disorder and how he and those close to him adapt and cope with the condition.

I`m aware I need to tread very carefully and sensitively when writing this review, as with any illness, I want to avoid being tactless.

The subject matter was handled well, I believe the author`s son had mental health issues so she can empathise with the characters in the book and this comes across well.

It is very clear from the beginning the mother ( Tara) of the main character (Branson) is devastated by her son`s struggle and is clearly in emotional pain, sometimes physical. I found it hard to warm to her in a way as a lot of times in the book she was sobbing, wailing, interfering and becoming hysterical, I almost wanted her to show more strength for her son who appeared to feel responsible for her. However, it shows the knock on effect mental illness can have on those around us.

His twin brother, younger sister and girlfriend seemed a lot calmer and accepting than Tara. I really likes Branson and the way he interacted with these 3 and I felt their warmth, support and maturity beyond their years.

I like the message the book puts across, most people will be close to someone with mental health issues, and we ask ourselves, `Am I enough to fix this person? ` and challenges if that is even a possibility.

I really get the feeling, quite rightly, that matters of the mind are subjective and things that appear real sometimes are not. All in all I really likes the book and it kept my interest throughout. I give it 3/5

A powerful story that delves into the still shied away from topic of mental illness. In particular hearing voices that are in your own head. Hearing voices at any age is probably one of the scariest things I could think of, not having control in my own head, not having that 'safe' place... but for a teenager, to all intents, a child experiencing that?

I love that the story not only shows what Branson goes through but what his mum, family and friends go through and how something so deeply personal weaves through so many lives. Silently creeping in with tendrils of uncertainty.

I cried in parts, A Divided Mind is emotional and forces you to face up to things that are usually hidden away. This is a story that could be read from teenagers onwards and it would be a fab addition to anyones bookshelf.

I'm hoping for a follow up as the ending is definitely leaves you needing more.
