Souls shrouded in darkness…
Focused on her studies and duties at the aquarium, Jewels prefers her solitary life. Burned many times and short on trust, she has more in common with her aquatic friends than the people around her. But she never imagined coming face to face with a shark named Clarence…a shark who talks!
As their friendship grows, Jewels must overcome her deep set mistrust. There are dangers, both in the Australian ocean and on dry land. Can Jewels depend on the great white or will his animal nature betray her?

In what situation is your self-esteem most at risk?
Jewels: Whenever I have to deal with people. I’ve been burned so many times. I just don’t trust them.
Is there anyone in your life that you are attracted to?
Jewels: I’m not attracted to Clarence – I mean, he’s a shark! But I love his personality and dedication.
What scares you about this person?
Jewels: He’s a great white shark. He could kill me in an instant.
What do you think he/she can do for you that no one else can?
Clarence: Be my friend. No one else hears me. Jewels hears my voice and provides me company.
What does this person know about you that no one else does?
Clarence: No one else knows I can talk!
How do you decide if you can trust someone?
Jewels: I guess when you place your life in that person’s hands and you are safe. I can do that with Clarence and I trust him.
How do you know you love someone?
Clarence: I’m not sure—not sure I’ve ever loved anyone. Can sharks love? I care about Jewels. So much so…maybe it’s love?
What are your goals in life?
Jewels: I want to work with marine life. Working at the aquarium would be perfect.
What are you most afraid of?
Jewels: I’m most afraid of being hurt. That’s why I don’t have a lot of friends.
If you had one wish, what would it be?
Clarence: I wish I could hold Jewels.
What do you like least about yourself?
Clarence: That I’m a shark. I wish I was human.
What do you think other people think of you?
Jewels: They probably think I’m snobbish. I’m just cautious.
Other family members:
Clarence: I wish I knew. I’m totally alone, the only talking shark in the entire ocean.
What’s your greatest source of joy?
Jewels: Clarence! He is so genuine and so dedicated. He just makes me happy with his innocent enthusiasm.

Jewels trusts no one, she's been hurt too many times by people that should be protecting her. So when she saves a great white from a tidal pool and he speaks to her, can she put her trust in him and where will it get her?
This is a lovely written story. It's the second novella in the Darkness series but can be read as a stand-alone. There is adventure, the growth of the characters, and a little bit of heartbreak. It's an easy read and can be quite quickly read but the story is enjoyable.
A recommendation by me.

I'm going to struggle with this review, and I apologise for that. The reviews for books that do not garner much of any feelings from me (either positive or negative) I find the hardest to write.
I liked the tale, I did, it just came across a bit sappy for me. I liked the twist as to who/what Clarence really is, although I kinda saw something along those lines coming at me.
It is clean, there is no violence, save for the shark getting caught in the fishing net. I've tagged it Young Adult, because I think this is probably more suited to an upper teen (14-18) than for me.
First I've read of this author. Will I read more? Not of this series, no. Possibly something else, though.
I DID finish it, so that's why I gave it. . .
3 stars
