Tour & #Giveaway: Love, Untruths, and the Smuggler's Ruse (A Tenet Gentlemen's Club #2) by Anne Shaw
@Archaeolibrary, @debbiereadsbook, @GoddessFish, @author_shaw,
Follow the gentlemen of the Tenet Club— an elusive group of noblemen that investigates crimes committed by the nobility—on a rousing journey of romance, suspense, and a guaranteed happily-ever-after. Viscount Langdon is torn between duty and desire. After his father’s death, he has every intention of resigning from the Tenet club when he meets Mrs. Adare. The lively widow with a knack for trouble piques more than his curiosity, and he agrees to one last assignment. Mrs. Elizabeth Adare is on a mission to bring a smuggler to justice, and nobody is going to get in her way, not even Lord Langdon. With the aid of the maddening, yet intriguing lord, she follows the clues to a troubling discovery; one that could expose her own secrets. After the investigation takes an unexpected turn, Elizabeth must choose between revealing the truth of her past and losing Langdon or allowing a murderer to go free.
“If I say yes, I have some rules and they are non-negotiable.” If he couldn’t dissuade Elizabeth, he would try to gain some concessions to assure her safety. “You will promise to follow my directions without question.”
“What if you’re incapacitated?” Head tilted, she studied him with shrewd eyes.
Langdon could see the cogs moving in her sharp mind. She was intent on getting her way, and so was he. Which meant they would have to find some sort of compromise, or the process was dead in the water. “I don’t intend to become incapacitated or injured for that matter. At the first sign of trouble, you will hide where I tell you until I can come find you.”
“What if we’re ambushed? Am I allowed to come to your aide, or must I find a couch and faint?”
He narrowed his eyes at her dripping sarcasm. “I will have your word that you will obey me without question, or my answer is no.”
“We both know that is an empty threat.” She plucked at a small piece of thread on the lace applique, a stray curl brushing her temple. “You can’t go without me. You don’t know what you’re looking for.”
“And you can’t go without me because you don’t know how to get into his office.” Arms crossed, he leaned back in the seat, one leg extended. Two could play at being stubborn.
4 out of 5 (very good)

This is book 2 in the Tenet Gentleman's Club series, but I have not read book 1. I did not feel as if I missed anything for not doing so since the couple in that book are not mentioned, I don't think, in this one.
You get pulled straight into this book, and what Elizabeth is trying to solve, right from page one, and It does not really let you go!
I liked that both Elizabeth and Langdon have a say, although it took me a little bit to grasp Langdon's first name and put the two together.
I liked that there is intrigue and drama. I did have an inkling, right from the start, about a certain character, so it was fun watching that all come to pass.
It is a historical romance, so it's full of the rules and regulations of the time, along with words for various things. Made me chuckle a time or two how the feelings these two had for each other were described towards the beginning. It's not overly explicit but it does carry some steam, once Elizabeth gave in to the need to have Langdon in the way she wanted.
It's a well-written story, that delivered to me just what I needed at the right time.
One teeny niggle though. The book is set in London, and as such, I expected ENGLISH words to describe certain things. A couple of things were given AMERICAN wordings.
First I've read of this author. Will I read more? Quite possibly if the blurb grabs. If it's historical, I will know to look for the English/American wordings and it won't bother me so much!
4 good, solid stars
