Gonzalo placed a pager on the bar in front of her and leaned in. “One of your boys left this for ya. Said he’d be here in a jiffy.”
“Mike?”
“One and the same. Reliable, ain’t he? Like a well-trained dog.”
Saoirse nodded absentmindedly. Since the moment she’d met him, Mike had been thorough. It didn’t take long for him to join her and become her right-hand man. It was all the more laughable that Piarelli had sent him her way, hoping Mike would create a weakness. But Piarelli had a twisted understanding of compassion and family at best. Else he never would’ve held Mike’s sister hostage to get him to do his bidding. He only knew how to apply pressure, not how to weave a bond. Not even with his own family.
Saoirse’s glass was empty before she’d realized, but Gonzalo was quick to replace it with another.
Instead of using the pager, she was spinning it around in her hand, thinking.
“He ain’t gonna come if you don’t call him,” Gonzalo advised her after he replaced the second scotch as well.
“I know, I’m just thinking.”
And she was. That was one of the nice things about Gonzalo. He never asked questions. He stuck to his own business and let her keep hers as well. Though, grateful for her continued patronage and dealing with some unruly customers on occasion, he did generally let her know if anyone had been asking around for her which was unnecessary but appreciated.
But the moment she let Mike pick her up, there’d be questions. No doubt there’d be questions about her visitor the night before. And about how she intended to retaliate to the rat of a man that was Garrison. She didn’t have an answer to either one just yet, not having had the chance to look at the contents of Jean’s flash drive, hidden inside of her bedside lamp, or to follow up on the name of his employer, Timothy Carlton. As for Garrison… she’d deal with him after she’d talked a spell to the men he’d sent.
She glanced at the clock. Already closing in on five a.m. and she’d just finished her third scotch. Perhaps it was time to call Mike. He’d be up worried sick all night otherwise. Saoirse had to keep herself from rolling her eyes at the motherly behavior of her right-hand man. At least she didn’t have to worry about Natalia staying up for her sake.
As she punched the numbers into the pager, a familiar smell wafted into her nose—the acute mix of cigar, cedarwood, and a hint of ocean. She heard steps of a familiar weight. Steps she’d heard a million times before.
Steps that belonged to a dead man.
She didn’t turn around, not even as the steps went past her and then, with a creak of the door, disappeared. Graham O’Shea was long gone. He’d been around for a long time, guiding her, molding her into shape, showing her the path to the person she was today. But, despite the nostalgia she felt, he wasn’t here now. Not anymore. Even though she almost wished he were. This was just his spirit haunting her, or rather, her brain tricking her into sensing him. She’d turned around often enough to know he was never there.
O’Shea was dead.
She’d killed him herself.
