My Grandchildren Made Me a Better Listener
As a young adult I was introduced to the concept of active listening. Over the years it helped me in business, sales, and leadership. What I did not expect was that it would become one of the most valuable tools in my life as a grandfather.
The gains that can be made by the simple act of listening to what is being said to understand the person speaking rather than to formulate a response cannot be overstated. If you are focused on how you will respond and not on what is being said you are at risk of losing the context that far transcends the word being spoken.
By both hearing and absorbing not only the words but also the nuances including tone, facial expression, energy level, energy level, body language and pacing you can truly understand what is being communicated.
Using active listening techniques with my grandchildren I have been able to gain a deep understanding of what brings them joy, their passions, and goals are.
During a breakfast, my grandson Felix casually mentioned that he liked coloring pictures of buildings. Many adults may have forgotten the comment before the meal ended. Because I was listening, I realized architecture fascinated him. For years afterward, coloring books filled with buildings we worked on coloring together became part of our Grandpa Days.
When my granddaughter Serena was three years old, I lifted her up so she could dip strawberries into a chocolate fountain at her favorite brunch spot near LAX. Most grandparents would have seen a child enjoying a sweet treat. Over the years, by listening to her questions, interests, and excitement about chocolate, I realized it was becoming something much bigger. Today she is known by many in the craft chocolate community as "the future of craft chocolate."
As a grandparent you have a unique ability to dedicate the time and undivided attention to mentor your grandchildren to fully develop those early interests into life-changing actions. Active listening allowed me to see my grandchildren becoming who they were before they saw it themselves.
