Sera is a LO-EC, a human who gained superpowers as an unintended side effect of a biotechnological breakthrough. Her unique abilities allowed her to survive while others like her, including her parents, were exterminated by a world government fearful of their potential.

After decades of hiding, she meets Naren, another superpowered survivor who has infiltrated the ranks of the military. Together, they form a plan to unite with other surviving LO-ECs, claim vengeance against the forces who murdered their families, and ultimately stoke a worldwide rebellion against the government that wanted them dead.

The entirety of 26th century Earth's armed forces stand in their way: Soldiers equipped with terrifying weaponry, armies with electromagnetic cannons, merciless bloodthirsty androids, and Spidre, the World Leader with unnatural abilities of his own. The world brought Sera and the other LO-ECs pain and loss, and they're determined to return it in kind.

For the first time in what seemed like an eternity, a cool breeze swept through the streets of downtown New Orleans. Entering out onto these streets from the main doors of a small building was a man in a blue military uniform. By this time of the day, a little more than an hour before sunset, most soldiers would have been at least slightly disheveled. Having worked a full day, they would have a sweat stain, some hair out of place, maybe an untucked shirt or two. Not this man. Perfectly laced and polished boots led to pants that somehow seemed freshly pressed, which led to a fully zipped-up tunic with various patches across the breast. The whole ensemble framed up a six-foot-tall athletic build, and perched on top was a clean-shaven, blemish-free face and perfectly slicked-back hair.

As the man took a few steps from the door, he felt a vibration in his inner pocket and unzipped his coat to reach inside. He pulled out a military issue mobile that projected the word “Can” into the air. He slid a small earbud out of the top of the mobile and stuck it in his ear while slipping the mobile back into his pocket.

“Investigator,” a cold, deep, mechanical voice said through the earbud.

Rewrite a movie scene from a novel perspective.

“Go…Jump off a balcony!” Jas exclaimed as she turned away from the guard rail and walked back towards her royal bedchamber. Her hopes were dashed as quickly as they had grown. This new Sehzade might have looked like that wonderful boy from the market, but his personality was no different from the rest of her suitors: stuck up, full of himself, and cared about nothing but her fortune and power

“Yea…right…” she heard the Sehzade mutter behind her.

“What?!” she turned and yelled at him, not fully hearing what he had said. When she turned, Jas saw that the Sehzade was awkwardly pulling his puffy white hat down over his head. She couldn’t figure out why at first, but after a moment realized that he must be feeling embarrassed.

“You’re right,” the Sehzade stated plainly as his face sank.

“You may be the Sultana, but you are not just a prize to be won,” he continued. “You should be free to make your own choice. I’ll go now.”

As his sentence concluded, the Sehzade leapt over the railing of the balcony, where nothing but a one-hundred-meter drop separated him and the lawns of the palace gardens below.

“No!” Jas screamed and ran toward the railing.

“What?! What!?” the Sehzade replied, as his head poked back up above the railing from the other side. Jas’ eyes went wide with astonishment.

“How…how are you doing that?” she asked. In response, the Sehzade rose further into the air, and as his feet came into view, Jas could see that he was being supported by a gorgeous area rug that was somehow floating under its own power. The light from her bedroom was just bright enough for her to make out the intricate, meticulously sewn gold and red designs on radiant purple fabric.

“It’s a magic carpet,” the Sehzade said with a smile.

“It’s lovely,” Jas replied. The carpet reached one of its golden tassels out towards her, as if it was extending a hand for her to take. She laid her palm on the tassel, and the front border of the carpet folded. The center of the fold touched her fingers, mimicking a kiss of respect and servitude. Even she, a Sultana with nigh unlimited wealth and a palace full of the world’s most expensive linens and fabrics, had never felt something as soft and warm as these magical threads.

“You don’t…want to go for a ride, do you?” the Sehzade asked. “We can get out of the palace, see the world…”

Jas’ heart raced. The prospect of seeing a whole new world, one beyond the palace gates and the village that surrounded it was almost enough to look past the Sehzade’s earlier transgressions. But the carpet was only about two meters long and one and a half meters wide. If it were on the ground, it would be plenty big enough for two people, but flying through the air was a different story entirely.

“Is it safe?” she asked.

“Sure. Do you trust me?” the Sehzade asked.

“What?” Jas asked. She had been asked that once before very recently, and it was a question she would never forget.

“Do you trust me?” the Sehzade asked again, extending a hand to help her onto the carpet.

Jas was suspicious. Not of the carpet’s integrity, but of the Sehzade’s denial that he and the boy from the market were not the same. It was enough to make her want to find out more.

“Yes,” she responded through squinted, questioning eyes, as she reached for the Sehzade’s hand. He pulled her onto the carpet and the carpet in turn took them both above the palace, to shining, shimmering, splendid view above the clouds.

Nate grew up in Brooklyn NY, but now calls the Bronx home along with his wife and their sons. Nate grew up on all things sci-fi. Partly due to his chronic illness, Nate always had a special place in his heart for the X-Men, and especially the invulnerable Wolverine. This was heavy inspiration for his first novel, Latency a superhero sci-fi story to be released March 5, 2024.
