Turning twenty-one is a huge milestone for anyone, but for Calvin, it’s a life-changing moment. On his twenty-first birthday, he’s to take over his family pack. This should be a blessing. A new beginning for him and his family, but it’s quite the opposite.
Calvin has spent his whole life being conditioned and trained for this role. As the first-born son, it’s his duty to his family. A rule that has gone by for generations. One his father is keen to follow on.
However, as his birthday approaches, he is given a gift by his mother. He can travel to the mainland and live the life of a normal, happy-go-lucky twenty-year-old on one condition – he returns for his birthday and decides whether to take up the role as Alpha or walk away.
Painting the town red should be the only thing Calvin has on his mind, but when his path crosses with a girl he discovers is in trouble, his wolf decides that they’re on a mission.
Paisleigh has always been different. Her pack has left her to wallow in her own little world… until an opportunity comes along, and they sell her to pay for a debt they owe.
Paisleigh always wanted to get away from her pack, but not like this.
What was supposed to be a week away from pack life turns into a week where Calvin has to call upon his wolf and other paranormal beings to help him find the girl before it’s too late. It’s a quest he never thought he’d embark on in his life.
Has Calvin got what it takes to save Paisleigh, figure out his life, and return to the pack he calls family to become the Alpha?

Calvin turns 21 in a week, and the weight of his pack will be on his shoulders. A week away before then is just what he needs. But then he gets on the ferry, and his wolf goes nuts. His mate is on the boat, and she is in danger. Paisleigh is sold to pay her family's debts, and the ferry ride will only take her deeper into the darkness. But a bright light shines in the young man who takes an interest. Can he rescue her before her soul is broken?
Ok, so I can't say I loved this book, but for the most part, I did enjoy it. I found myself nitpicking though, and even now, as I'm typing, more springs to mind!
Paisleigh is on the same ferry to Aberdeen as Calvin, who lives on an island. Yet Calvin's Alpha and father didn't know her pack? There is a scene where they are holding hands, and in the next bit, they touch for the first time. I also got a bit confused at times who was speaking, cos there is a huge supporting cast.
Lots of inconsistencies that put me off a bit.
There is, for a shifter romance, very little smexy times. Now, part of that is on the back of what Paisleigh goes through before she gets rescued. Or, rather, what she MIGHT have gone through. While it's all laid out for you, on page, the world into which she has been sold, Paisleigh is fortunate to not actually get too far down the path.
And, it is first person, present tense and multi-point of view, so you know 😜
But I did finish it, and I jumped straight into book 2, so it wasn't all bad.

The Shetlands suddenly don’t seem so dull after all…
Keiron has been conditioned his whole life to become the Beta wolf of his pack when he comes of age, and it’s what he has worked tirelessly for. It’s his only priority in life… until a boys’ trip to Aberdeen turns his straightforward, easy going life into a spin.
Keiron stumbles across his soulmate, which should be the best moment of his life, but finding his mate in such dire straits is messing with him physically and mentally. His head and his heart are warring with one another, and for the first time in his life, he doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going.
Harlow has always been a strong, independent wolf shifter who loves nothing more than exploring the mountains with her mountain rescue team… until she takes her eye off the ball and the mountains become her downfall.
Being captured by the enemy, thrust into a powerful sex slave ring, and left without her abilities, Harlow needs to find a way to stay strong and survive the worst moments of her life.
Harlow and Keiron don’t only have to figure out their lives, they need to decide if their feelings for one another are justified.
Can Harlow move to a remote island away from everything she once knew?
Can Keiron convince Harlow that his island is meant for her, and that nothing will ever hurt her again?
One thing is for sure, The Shetlands are never going to be the same again.

This is the second book in the Healing Duet, and you really MUST read book 1, Healing Her, before this one. It follows on, and you need that book's story to follow what happens next.
Keiron will be Calvin's Beta once he takes over the pack. Leaving for Aberdeen didn't quite turn out to be the week he expected. Finding his mate in the hands of a sex trafficking ring was not on his to-do list! Harlow has been caught by an enemy unknown. Being rescued at the point she was meant she could go home. But why was her wolf so hell bent on staying near the beta wolf who rescued the girls?
Now, I wasn't too impressed with book 1 in this duet, but book 2 was far, FAR better.
There is some on-page violence to Harlow, and you need to be aware of it. I do think it's necessary for the plot, though, as much as I hated reading it. And the bad guy does get his comeuppance!
I loved that Keiron, while not happy, nor was his wolf, let Harlow decide whether she wanted to come to him, or not, after her recovery at home. her wolf wasn't happy to leave Keiron, but she knew they had to try to heal at home. Once Harlow goes to Keiron, they both instantly start to feel better.
I didn't like what Paisleigh gets Harlow to do, but then again, as she says, she is a big girl and can make her own choices about her actions.
Again, first person, present tense and multi-point of view. I didn't notice it quite so much here, maybe because I enjoyed this book more.
I did think I could see some other pairings between the supporting cast, and I wonder if there will be any more of this pack. I would enjoy catching up with them!
Oh, one thing: it says that THIS book is some 70 pages shorter than book 1. I didn't find that, I thought this was a lot longer!
Still, a much better read than book 1, so...
4 solid stars
