THE PRINCE OF ASH AND BLOOD is about a vampire prince imprisoned under false charges. The appearance of a new prisoner, a werewolf girl who was betrayed and tortured in the name of the crown, interrupts his plots of revenge. With a new cause to stand behind, the vampire prince plans his own death as a means for her escape. But the kingdom has needs only the prince can fulfill. If both survive the dungeon, can they also survive the world of political intrigue, vengeance, and a newly awoken threat to the crown and his people?

Action, adventure, conspiracy, and danger intertwine in this paranormal take of The Count of Monte Cristo.

Vander is imprisoned in his father's castle, for killing his step mother's guards. But he didn't do what they said he did. Months later, a new resident to the cells below the castle force Vander to embrace his destiny. Carys is a werewolf, imprisoned for attempting to kill the Duchess. When Vander gets her tale from her, it appears they are both puppets in a much larger play.

For the most part, I really did enjoy this book. Its different, and different is always good in my opinion.

Vander has his say in the first person, and Carys in the third. I liked that, it was right for these two for their say to be portrayed as such.

What I has some. . . . . . . issues . . . . .with, is Vander himself. He comes across all high and mighty, extremely well educated, corrects Carys' speech really early on, but he is only 17. He comes with a wealth of knowledge, and world wise sayings, and it all felt a little...off to me.

Also, there was talk, late in the book, of a prophecy. That felt kinda chucked in at the end, just to fill space. I needed to hear about that way before it all went down.

BUT!!!

I didn't spot a single spelling mistake, and no editing errors. The story flowed well. There is no sexual content and some violence to Carys when she is being held prisoner, hence the Upper Young Adult tag I'm giving it. I'd let my 15 year old daughter read it, if she took after me in her reading habits, but she doesn't and it pains me so!

The first of a trilogy, and I really REALLY want to read more about Vander and Carys, what happens to them after this, moving forward. What happens to the Duchess now her plans have been thwarted.

3.5 solid stars, round UP for the blog and Amazon.
